here's a short allegory that popped into my head lately, wether or not you choose to see it as connected to my reality is up to you
there's a challange in front of me. a huge obstacle course i have to lead my team accross. that's ok, i love a challange. i'm not sure quite where the end of it is, but they have promiced me a map so i'm not very worried. as long as i know how to get there i'm sure i can pull my team through. they always give new team leaders the map right off the bat. wait a moment here...why are my hands handcuffed together. looking down, i see they have also shackled my feet. that's ok. i love a challange. as long as i get a map i can still pull my team through. all the other team leaders are gathered around a large copy of the map, they are going over the route with them to be sure they know where they're going. they are giving the other team leaders the directions they need to get to the end. i can see a corner of the map from here, enough to kind of get my bearings. i don't get a map for some reason, i'm overlooked. that's ok, i love a challange. my team and the other's are being timed, not racing each other, but all racing the clock to finish in an acceptable time frame. i'm the only one wearing handcuffs. i'm the only one shackled, too. can't they see that this makes it harder for me to get my team accross the obstacles? don't they know that i'm not even sure where i'm going, let alone how to get there? oh well, i love a challange. we'll make it through this anyway. as i try to navigate the obstacles, handcuffed and shackled and clueless as to where they lead, i loose some of my team mates along the way. they can't deal with my constant backtracking and second guessing myself. they dont' want to follow someone who doens't know where she's leading them. they're tired and sore and they're not having fun with this mess. that's ok....no it's not ok. but it's what they have decided upon. they must be right, they set these courses up all the time. if i get to the end in time they will undo my shackles. if i find the way out of this mess they'll give me the map.

i have three less employees today than i did yesterday. i hate loosing people. even the ones who need to be gotten rid of. i keep mistakenly hoping i can train them or something. i'm too nice. i think people can change more than they really can. i'm kind of stupid that way. it makes me a less than wonderful boss, i think, this unwillingness to fire people unless i'm practically forced by my hr department. and i still don't really do it, i find a way to outsource them, i set them up with interviews for their next job, i write them letters of reference. i cover for them when their next job calls by saying they quit. today one person quit. two i had to fire b/c they wouldn't quit and save me the trouble. this is my least favorite part of my job. nevermind the blood thristy piranah like customers....this is the part that i hate.

aparently you're not supposed to change for people. i didn't know that. i mean, i know you don't fundamentally change who you are for people, but i was under the mistaken impression that you are supposed to change the surfase stuff to make the people you care about happy. if that's not how you make people smile what is? i'm lost...............
